Brief Answer:
Give plenty of curd or yogurt since it contains good bacteria

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Children often suffer from episodes of cough and cold as well as sore throat. Mostly sore throat is caused due to a viral infection but can be due to some bacterial infections as well. Your doctor had prescribed Maxithral on the assumption of a bacterial infection but antibiotics may often give rise to rashes especially if the infection is viral. On the other hand, Moxclav is likely to have killed the good bacteria residing in the intestines, along with the bad bacteria (if any) and is thereby responsible for antibiotic associated diarrhoea. Things to be done now are as follows:
* Continue Moxclav and complete the course.
* Give ORS (oral rehydration solution) sip by sip after mixing a full XXXXXXX in the designated amount of plain water (200ml or 1 litre depending upon the size of the sachet). Complete the solution within 24 hours of reconstitution.
* Give plenty of curd or yogurt since it contains beneficial bacteria
* You may also give one XXXXXXX of Econorm twice daily for 3 days. It also contains the beneficial bacteria.
* Be patient. The diarrhoea may continue for 1-2 days after the dose of Moxclav is completed. But if adequate replenishment of the lost water and salts is done, you need not worry.
* You need to visit your doctor if the frequency of passage of urine comes down.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Dr. Just wanted to know since he got these loose motions and vomiting I stopped mox . I also gave him Emeset for his vomiting. Should I continue Mox now after a day's break that has happened?

Brief Answer:
Emeset can be given for vomiting. Break in antibiotic course not advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Stopping an antibiotic midway may give rise to antibiotic resistance and complicate the matters further. So, it is not advisable to stop it abruptly. I would not advise a gap of one day break. Just administer the next dose even though doses have been missed in between. You may give Emeset half an hour before food or as required, if there is vomiting.

Hope that helps.
