Question : Hello. Since April 2015 i started having itching scalp and i noticed that I am losing my hair. While i comb a section of hair i pull 4-5 strands out. They have white bulbs at the ends. The hair loss is diffuse. 3 mos later my hair is still doing this. I now have scalp burning and migraines. full strands of hair come out when i pass my hands through. My scalp looks normal. I also have developed hormonal acne. I went to the doctor and all my blood tests are normal. My ferritin is 33. I made some changes this year. Around February i started a diet and a pill called Contrave for weight loss. I lost weight (25lbs) but stopped taking it after i noticed hair loss and acne. I thought this could be the cause?

Brief Answer:
Your hair could be falling in its natural cycle as new hair grows.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me insist you not to panic. Everyday we lose hair and that is absolutely normal. New hair are constantly growing and old hair gets replaced by being shed. It is normal for us to lose a 100 hair everyday and that does not mean that you have excessive hairfall.

However, it seems that you have oily skin. Oily skin occurs in response to sex hormones. Oily skin is frequently associated with seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff which can be a cause of hairloss. In such a case, application of ketoconazole shampoo (available in brands like Nizoral or shampoos containing ZPTO) twice or thrice a week.

I do not think that the weight loss medication has any role to play in your hairfall.

Hope that helps.

Regards

I believe that the hair loss is excessive. Does the scalp burning and migraines explain the situation? How long will this shedding go on? I will try the shampoo.

Brief Answer:
Ketoconazole shampoo should be helpful

Detailed Answer:
Both migraine or dandruff could be related to burning of scalp but migraine would not cause hair loss. I hope that use of the shampoo would be helpful.

I don't notice any dandruff. Are the hair loss and acne somehow related? Is there anything else i can use along with the shampoo in between washes for the burning?

Brief Answer:
Oily skin could be the cause of your problems

Detailed Answer:
The acne and the scalp irritation are both linked to oily skin. Even though you do not see dandruff, the shampoo should be helpful. If that does not help, you would need to see a dermatologist.
