Question : I have a "lump" near left nipple that arose about 6 mos ago. Lately it has started to itch & has become discolored as bruised. Now a black spot has turned up with a slight indention. It is warm to touch and red as well.

Brief Answer:
It could be a Sebaceous cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like a Sebaceous cyst occurred due to hair follicle of that area.
Another possibility is a Chronic abscess .
The swelling has to be excised surgically and send it for histopathological examination (Biopsy ) exact diagnosis.
Please consult your Surgeon and proceed accordingly.
No test will give exact diagnosis except Biopsy.
Hope I answered your query.
If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards
