Posted on Wed, 25 Mar 2015
Question: developed itching red welts rash at underarms at midnight, eventually extending down both inner upper arm to bilateral anticubitals. Itching at wrists behind thumbs, but no rash. If I scratched at belly skin, welts developed at finger lines. Took 50 mg Benadryl PO Improved by 3am.. This am visible red spots where welts had been, but skin smooth and no itching. At 2pm All the above returned but more extensive into all warm areas including breasts, buttock, back and belly in patches. Home from Baby Shower at 5:50pm and just took Benadryl 50 mg. Local urgent care closed. No other symptoms. Took biweekly allergy shot at allergists yesterday into bil arms about 3 pm Been on them over 2 years now.

Acute urticaria. Des loratadine can be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the welts and its severity. After analyzing your query it appears to be related with an attack of acute urticaria.

Though benadryl is bit effective but gives short term relief. In your kind of situation I generally prefer to give either Des-loratadine (available as Claritin ) or levocetrizine. It can be taken up to 3 to 4 times in 24 hours. Though steroids are not given as first line of therapy but if the severity increases then I prefer to give oral steroids.

I suggest you to avoid any synthetic clothes and avoid extremes of environmental factors.

I hope these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further queries.
