Suggest Treatment For Joints Pain Caused Due To Zetia Intake

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: My dad took Zitia for a year. This medicine caused joint pain that he feels whenever he sits or lays down, but not when he is moving and laboring. He recently stopped taking Zitia. About how long does it take for his joints to heal? Any suggestions on how he can alleviate his joint pain?

Brief Answer:
Usually in 6-8 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Statins or Zetia are likely to cause Myalgias/ Muscle cramps and less commonly joint pains. To confirm this, your father can undergo a blood test- CPK (CREATINE PHOSPHO KINASE) enzyme estimation. If this test reports a high value, then the muscle pains and joint pains that he is having may be attributed to the usage of Zetia. In such a case, the pain should subside in 6-8 weeks after stopping the use of the drug.
In case the enzyme levels are normal then other causes of joint pain like osteoarthritis or Vitamin D3 deficiency need to be ruled out after proper blood tests.
Right now he can start taking calcium magnesium and vitaminD3 supplements along with joint lubricant supplements like glucosamine after consulting his orthopedician. Taking mild pain killers like Tylenol and doing a hot fomentation will also help.
I hope this answers your query.
