Suggest Treatment For Kidney Stones In A Hypertensive Person With Diabetes

Question: My father who is a 54 year old male underwent surgery of his kidneys. There were stones which were removed and splints were installed in the ureters. Now he is supposed to undergo another procedure for removing those. Urinal has returned to normalcy and creatinine levels are down to 5 from 10 within 3 days. I'm attaching the discharge summary here in. Can you please tell as to how grave is the current situation ? will his kidneys return to previous level of function?

My father is a diabetic and also has hypertension. He doesn't smoke or drink and goes for a walk daily.

After the surgery since his creatinine levels are improving drastically it is likely that his kidneys will return to normal function soon. I have seen the attached discharge summary. The problem was due to the obstruction of ureters caused by calculi. Now that the stones have been removed the kidneys will return to normal function. After the removal of the stent the dilated ureters will gradually come back to normal size. In addition to this, strict control of blood sugar levels is also needed to minimise the effect of diabetes on kidney function.

We are following renal diet. But when he had puffed rice with chopped onions yesterday evening,he skipped dinner as he wasn't hungry. can we give him dal or egg white? anything that will help him regain strength and some muscle. Also, he seems to be more sleepy than usual. Being a diabetic complicates the matter even more. please advise.

Thanks for writing again.
You can give him watery dal and egg white. Being sleepy is due to weakness. He should be given multivitamins and fruits- not sweet ones with short and small meals every two hours. He can be given porrige and chappati with vegetables also. He can have yogurt and milk.

my father is sweating profusely all of a sudden. Any specific reason for this?

The sweating can be due to weakness arising out of such a surgery. This can indicate an under-active thyroid - this is the gland that regulates our metabolism.You need to get his thyroid levels checked.
Another common reason is environmental factors, such as too many covers or heavy pajamas.
You can rule out these causes and increase his fluid intake.
