Question: hello. I'm a 62yrold male, with kidney stones history. Currently I'm having pain in both kidneys as I move around my office. not as severe as a ks attack but constant and sharp as I move. pain is in the kidney not the tubes. some 'minor' swelling in ankle shown where socks stop (not tight socks) . wondering if I should go to my local doctor for a unine test for 'protein' level , etc.... Not severe enough for ER .......yet. thanks XXXXXXX Sparkman ( YYYY@YYYY )

Hi and welcome.

I don't think that you should see ER unless there's severe pain in kidneys associated with fever, blood in urine and inability to urinate.

Otherwise, it would be good to see doctor and have basic urine analysis, kidney markers and kidney ultrasound done. This will show us if there any hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys), or glomerulonephritis (inflammation of some internal structures of the kidneys).

Feel free to ask further.
Wish you good health.
Regards

Dr. Rommestein, thanks for your response. I did go to my family doctor and he though it might just be strained back muscles and gave me a steroid shot and did an Urine analysis which was normal. the pain is still there , maybe a bit better. will see how the rest of the week goes. Seems to be a bit of swelling this am.

thanks for your time. XXXXXXX Sparkman

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Well, if urine is fine then urinary infection can be ruled out and this is probably not a serious issue. You can wait and see for several more days in what direction will it go.

Beside kidney issues, swelling may indicate venous or lymph circulation problems and in some cases heart disorders. But some other symptoms would be present in this case.

Wish you good health
