Question: I was recently, last December, diagnosed with "lazy colon" I was given script for lactoaise sp? with 12 refills. Can I assume from that that it is a long ongoing condition? What should I look for as in complications?

Brief Answer:
Lazy colon

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Colonic inertia (also called lazy colon)is a condition in which the colon contracts poorly and retains stool. This can be determined by colon transit studies.
No matter what its cause, it can make regular bowel movements difficult, causing bloating and gas. It is long-term condition.
Lazy colon syndrome is often caused by an underlying dietary issue which may include:inadequate hydration, lack of fibre (both soluble & insoluble),food allergies (wheat, gluten & preservatives), and over-acidification of the colon (caused by over consumption of soft drinks and/or inadequate vegetable intake).
Potential complications:
Chronic constipation due to lazy colon can cause fecal impaction, or a mass of hard stool unable to be eliminated by normal bowel movement. An impaction can cause serious consequences if left untreated, such as ulceration and death of anal tissue.
Constipation has also been linked with colon cancer, stroke, headaches, heart attacks, and varicose veins.
Syrup Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide which is taken orally. The dose is adjusted to produce two semi-soft stools daily.
