To recapitulate: Male/64 - severe flank pain on left on coughing - pain is almost unbearable - started a couple of hours ago - no other symptoms ...
The pain on coughing particularly in the flank can be due to one of the following reasons:
Muscular spasm in that particular part.
Fractured lowest rib or costochondritis.
This can be diagnosed by:
Clinical evaluation and examination by your Doctor.
Investigations as needed like X-ray, ultrasonography or CT scan/MRI to confirm the clinical diagnosis.
Till then take an anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen to reduce the pain and inflammation.
Apply heal locally.
Take strict bed rest.
Mild laxative to have soft stool tomorrow and thence.
Treatment of coughing or any other problems which can cause increased strain on the already ailing part.
