Question : Hi Doctor. My daughter is 13months old. She suffered from fever a week back post which she is suffering from losse motions for last 3-4days. Though the motions were not completely liquid and she had loose motions once or twice a day. today she has loose motions thrice a day. Her doctor has suggested for a stool test- Stool for PH & Reducing Substance, the report for which by grace of god is normal. Her doctor has suggested to simply stop milk for a day or two thats it. while we took a second opinion from another doctor who suggested to Syp Cefspas or Syp Taxim (Dry Syp) 2.5ml twice a day.

Would really appreciate if you could help me out on this and suggest what to do.

Brief Answer:
continue Taxim and add probiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Usually loose stools is viral infection and may last a few days.
If it doesn't settle and your doctor feels it could be a bacterial infection, you can continue Taxim syrup which is an antibiotic.
What is more important is the following
1. Probiotic like bifilac XXXXXXX one in the morning and one in the evening.
2. Oral rehydration solutions like electral to be given in sips every few minutes.
3. Zinc at 10 mg per day as drops or syrup for 2 weeks. This will help in reducing the number of loose stools.

Ensure your child passes urine atleast six to eight times a day.
If not consult your doctor again to check for dehydration.
Wishing your daughter good health and speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun

Brief Answer:
better to stop

Detailed Answer:
It is better to stop milk and milk products as advised by your doctor.
This will help in digestion.
Most of the kids will not be able to digest milk in the presence of loose stools because of temporary lactose intolerance.
This will improve in a week.
Dont worry.
Then you can restart.
Rice based diet can be safely given.
