Suggest Treatment For Low Leg Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Hi -
I've suffered lower right leg pain for more than a year. My PC physician ordered x-rays and ultra sound - all negative. Then I was sent to a vascular institute for another ultrasound - also negative. Eventually I was referred to a rheumatologist who said that it wasn't caused by arthritis, but recommended a custom orthotic, which I got, because my arches were low. Recently, I was sent to physical therapy, and had dry needle therapy as well as regular exercises, which I still do at home. However, no one has ever diagnosed exactly what the problem is. My usual routine had been 3 mile walk in the morning, with an occasional hike, and this pain showed up overnight in January 2014, and has persisted since then. It's quite tolerable during the day, but my sleep is consistently interrupted when the leg aches during the night. Once I'm up for the day and at least moving around, the pain is minimal. Is there a certain specialty physician that is recommended for this kind of problem? I'll be 70 years old next month, and am not ready to "pack it in". Thanks for any suggestion.

Brief Answer:
You should consult with a Neurologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Low leg pain may be caused by pinched nerve and by leg blood vessels dysfunction.

In your case vascular leg diseases and arthritis are excluded as possibility of your symptoms.

One thing that remains as possible cause of your symptoms is lower leg neuralgia that may be caused by:

1. herniated disc disease
2. nerve compression during his way (tarsal tunnel syndrome)
3. peripheral neuropathy

One simple and fast examination that may confirm diagnosis is nerve conduction study ( EMG/ ENG).

I suggest you to discuss with a Neurologist about above mentioned possibilities.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
