Question: Hello Doctor. I am a 30 year old Male. Just a few hours ago I hurt my back while lifting a heavy object at home. I have been taking rest from then by applying hot pack and applying Brugel ointment. Due to the pain in my lower back i am having difficulty in sitting and standing. I am on bed due to that. How long does the pain last? Do you recommend any medication? Please advise.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
may last a few days, pain killers and muscle relaxants would help

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The pain can last up to a week in some persons, in others only up to 3 or 4 days.

Rest, ice therapy initially with warm therapy after the first few days , anti inflammatory pain killers and possibly a muscle relaxant may be needed.

Anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac would help with the pain.
After using the pain medication , when it has kicked in, you may want to try some stretching exercises or have someone massage the area, to help with resolution.

Eg of muscle relaxants are flexeril, XXXXXXX robaxain

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Hi Doctor. Thank you for the advise. I started taking ibuprofen and a muscle relaxant. Also applying hot therapy. Today, I feel some improvement as I am able to move around in home slowly and done stretching for some time. I feel the pain worsening when getting up or bending. Also, I am feeling pain in my right buttock and leg if I move around or sit for long time. Is this normal during the course of treatment?

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
can sometimes go to a crescendo

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the late reply

With muscle injury, the pain can sometimes progress in a crescendo, it can get worse over a few days till it reaches the XXXXXXX point then start to slowly resolve.
It would be worse with any movement that requires use of the involved muscles.

Pain in the buttock or leg can occur with some back injuries if when trying to compensate for the affected area more stress is placed on other areas or if there is possible impact on the surrounding nerves.
It can be monitored to see if it changes unless it is very severe or associated with symptoms of nerve injury (weakness, tingling, numbness or burning), in which case, you should see a doctor.

Thank you Doctor. I am able to slowly walk around and sit for sometime today. Looks like i am recovering. Now bending is the only problem where I am facing pain. I had to rely on some external support while bending but could not bend directly. There is some stiffness though in the lower back area. I am a software engineer. Now, do I need to stay away from work starting tomorrow? If so, how many days should I stay away from my work? Please advise.

Brief Answer:
if no major discomfort on sitting then can go

Detailed Answer:
HI

If sitting for a prolonged time is still uncomfortable and this is likely to occur at work, it may be best to stay away for at least 1 to 2 days.

If you do not have to be seated for hours at a time and can get up for a few minutes every hour and sitting is not much of a problem at the moment then you can return tomorrow.

Continue using both medications. Stretch and move about as much as possible to avoid stiffness of the muscles.

Warm compress to the areas would also help

If anything else unclear , you can let me know
