Question: I started to have lower back pain about six weeks ago, then about four weeks ago I started having a stiff neck and shoulder pain, I am now becoming a little forgetful, and have had diareaha for the past three days. I have been on prescription pain meds and muscle relaxers which have not helped, I also seem to be a little off balance and bump into things...any idea what might be wrong I am a 58 yr old white male 5'11" tall 260.. Had a complete physical 4 months ago and no issues

Brief Answer:
Can you upload copy of your medical report

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. I've read your consult information and also the query you posed to Dr. BN. I am in general agreement with his hypothesis that your neck and shoulder pain could be from arthritic changes in the neck or cervical spine. Of course, you're also complaining low back pain. You state in the information from Dr. BN's consult that you are in "relatively" good health. Can you define that for me a little bit? To me that suggests that SOMETHING may not be perfectly right with you....what would that be? If you uploaded a copy of your physical record you had several months ago then, I'd be able to get information from the report from the doctor that could help answer some questions I have.

No matter, there is an important detail that you do measure out to be rather overweight by way of the BMI calculator. With the numbers you present your BMI is 36. Although BMI is allowed to go up a bit with age....36 is simply too much. This could be contributing to your lower back pain as one possibility.

As far as the other symptoms are concerned I would propose to you that your forgetful could be a combination between the medications you are on which can cause big time lapses in memory and cognitive processes just in the hydrocodone, muscle relaxers, and Valium. I never like using Valium on people because its side effects on the BRAIN itself can really linger long after the medication causing the changes is stopped. The other thing that could be affecting your cognition and memory is just the diarrhea itself since the risk with that picture is DEHYDRATION and poor calorie intake.

While it is certainly possible and maybe even PROBABLE that your diarrhea is medication induced you may wish to cover all your bases but collecting several (3) samples of stools that you take to the doctor for analysis of microbes, blood, etc. Have them look at the samples for culture/sensitivity as well as looking for blood and other routine things.

You should maintain EXCELLENT HYDRATION, consider taking a bulking agent such as Metamucil or IMODIUM in order to bring the diarrhea until rapid control until you know what kind of infectious process may or may not be going.

I hope these answers satisfactorily address your questions. If so, may I ask the favor of a HIGH STAR RATING with some written feedback?

Also, if there are no other questions or comments, may I ask you CLOSE THE QUERY on your end so this question can be transacted and archived for further reference by colleagues as necessary?
