Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain While Having Hypothyroidism

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: Hi Im a 30yo female, no real history of health issues until past 3-4 years. Only chronic condition I have is hypothyroidism. Worsening throbbing of lower back pain that goes down into leg, only on the right side. MRI was done of lower lumbar spine, no findings. Continues to be an issue. Doctor 3 years ago said it was in my head and I have not been back since. Recent general itching over body (abdomen mainly at night)- no issues with bugs or anything. Very bloated as well, almost all of the time.

Visited urgent care for severe pain 6 months ago but same response- offered to give pain meds and sent me home.

Brief Answer:
Needs work up and management

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. pain in back radiating to legs looks like compressive neuropathy, MRI report should have highlighted any pinched nerve or nerve root compression. With hypothyroidism, one can have generalised body aches as well and this leg and back pain may be attributed to that too. Get a euthyroid state achieved by regular thyroxine intake. Other possibilities liek fibromyalgia etc should be ruled out too.

Itching at night should be evaluated too for the causes like dermatitis, eczema, scabies etc. Try some doxepin or antihistamines for the itch and see if it helps.

Talk to your doctor , let them try to correlate these three seemingly different pathologies and connect the dots. I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
