Question : This last Saturday I grabbed my 500lb motorcycle that was falling to the ground. I immediately felt severe lower back pain on my right side. I used Ice and kept my legs elevated. I was not able to move until yesterday/Monday.

Today/Tuesday...I now have numbing and extremely bad sharp pain, I can hardly walk. It goes down my buttocks and leg. I am a big guy 5'11 and 250lbs. I do work out at the gym 5-6 times a week. No steroid or drug use. My girlfriend said it may be a herniated disc from reading about it. I understand it may take weeks or months to heal. I did minor work yesterday (construction but no lifting) Today it has become worse then when I actually sustained the injury. I truly was at the point of going to the ER this morning, however it is expensive and from reading it appears there is nothing they would be able to do? My question and concerns are with this type of injury can it cause further damage and should I actually go to the ER? I have no health problems, back problems and never had a surgery so I feel I need more guidance then just reading from the web. Thank you

You may wait and see.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

As you do not have any serious neurological symptoms, most likely the injury was not that serious. However, in some cases fracture of the spine can give such symptoms as well as spine disc herniation.
I you go to ER, spine x-rays will be done. And even if they diagnose some spine fracture, most of such fractures do not need any treatment at all. Bed rest is the best you can do and what you should do for sure.
Avoid any physical activity for a week or so. And just decide, either it is getting better or worse. If its getting better, keep resting and slowly start some activity after a week or two.
If no improvement or worsening, go to your doctor and have spine MRI done.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
