Question : Hi Dr. Rynne. I've got a pea to marble sized lump between my ribs approximately 3" below and right of my right nipple. Its been there for at least a year and hasn't seemed to get larger or smaller in that time. I'm tall, lean and muscular, so it is slightly visible in a mirror and definitely something I can feel. I can move it around slightly, as it doesn't seem to be growing out of the intercostal muscle or out of the boneitself. It isn't too tender unless I put a lot of direct pressure on it during an exercise or activity. Should I see a doctor for examination? And if so, a general/family doctor, or someone more specialized? Thanks!
Brief Answer:
no need to worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
This is commonly seen in this area and in most cases this is benign subcutaneous lesion such as lipoma, fibroma, muscle knot due to previous injury, trauamtic fibroma or ateroma. Some more serious lesions are extreme rarity especially in your age and it would manifest with more serious symptoms. If there is no pain, growth or redness I dont think that treatment is required. Otherwise, you can do ultrasound with needle biopsy and then it can be surgically removed under local anasthesia. Wish you good health. Regards
