Suggest Treatment For Lump In Throat After A Tonsillectomy

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Feb 2016
Question: Hello, I had a tonsillectomy/ adenoidectomy on December 15th. The surgeon said it was a very difficult surgery as they were very infected. I am getting relief with thick mucus, and eating, but I do still feel like I have a lump in my lower throat, almost close to my trachea. Today when I ate something "normal" I really had that feeling. Could this still be because of the tonsillectomy? How long could this last? What is a normal amount of healing time for a 40 year old having a difficult tonsillectomy...ugh! Also, is there anything I can do to make that feeling less annoying? Also, the other ENT said I should be taking an anti-inflammatory. Since I am on 60mg of dexilant for apparent reflux, what anti-inflammatory can I take that won't intefere with that?

Brief Answer:
its common (4-6 weeks).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having postoperative lumpy sensation.

Answers and solutions for your query.

1. Adeno-tonsillectomy is a general anaesthesia procedure, where endo-tracheal tube inserted from mouth to lungs via trachea. Small (wear and tears) abrasions and ulcers are common during intubation or extubation of the tube. It is quite common, one can feel lumpy feeling post-operatively.

2. Compare to adults, kids will recover well post-operatively. Do not worry, it will take time, usually complete recovery occurs around 4-6 weeks. Take simple over the counter antacid syrup (mucaine/peptocaine/zellusil mps), which has got local anaesthetic preparation, where you can free from lumpy sensation.

3. With DEXILANT (dexlansoprazole), you can take simple over the counter (tylenol or dolo or panadol), which is safe in acid reflux patients to combat pain and inflammation.
