Suggest Treatment For Lump In Throat With Swelling And Excess Saliva

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: Hi there- wrote a few days ago and now have a follow up question. Have had lump in throat for most of summer. In the past week have had ALOT of saliva. Went to ENT who put a scope down throat and said it was swollen. He also said I have an inflamed whartons duct/sublingual caruncle. Told me to take omeprazole for possible GERD. I am worried that this is an infection but don't want to second guess what ENT told me. Redness and saliva have not stopped. Worried that it is something serious. Are the throat and the saliva and the swelling related. What do you advise? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Laryngopharyngeal reflux...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

After going through the history I do feel, your doctor has rightly diagnosed. You seem to be suffering from Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) secondary to acid reflux disease.

LPR happens when the acid from the stomach regurgitates into the throat thus causing inflammatory reactions in the mucosa. This is evidenced by increased salivary secretions and redness in the mucosa.

Do not worry! This is one of the commonest medical condition. With appropriate intervention, it can be taken care of.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water, to reduce the congestion
2. Try taking Proton pump inhibitor such as Esomeprazole or Pantoperazole and a prokinetic.
3. Avoid stress, coffee/tea/alcohol/smoking (if any).

I'm sure with the above interventions you will definitely feel better. Revert back to me if you have any further queries.

Thank you so much for your help. A second opinion that supports what my local doctor said is reassuring.
