Suggest Treatment For Memory Loss After Hip Operation

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jun 2014
Question: In Dec. 2010 my wife had a hip operation. She lost her memory! Before the operation she ran a house hold , check book, helped teach a Sunday school class. Drove the car, did everything, worked with the grand kids. To day she just wonders thru the house .She has no memory, short or long term. I take care of her each day. I took her to two different neurologist. Both gave her an Alzheimer's test, of course she failed. I contacted Mayo Clinic in XXXXXXX Ariz. . Someone in admittance for neurology . I ask if we could have an appointment, with some kind of lab work, something in depth, not an Alzheimer test. They simply ask; do you want an appointment or not.

Brief Answer:
Please get cobalt level done

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am not aware about the process to get an appointment with a doctor at Mayoclinic or the process that follow's thereafter. But I can give you some information about her problem.

Even though for various types of dementia there are very few tests that are available and most of our judgement for dementia is on the basis of clinical history that directs us to next level of investigation. But the simplest tests that should be done are serum Vitamin B12 level, Thyroid function test, and as you mentioned the hip operation, if that operation was hip replacement then please get cobalt level in her blood checked. As the joint prosthesis are made of cobalt and that is now implicated in many neurological syndromes that are occurring post joint replacement. Further a screening MRI brain should be done to look for the structural changes in the brain.

I suggest you discuss about these aspects when you visit the neurologist at Mayo or with your local doctor.

Hope this helps.

Regards
