Suggest Treatment For Menstrual Cramps And Dull Pain Near Ribcage

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Sep 2014
Question: Hello,

I am a 17 year old female, and have been taking aleve (naproxen sodium) for the past three days for menstrual cramps. This morning and last, upon waking up, I felt a tightening, dull pain in the middle of my upper ribcage. It comes in waves and only lasts for around 10 minutes. Could this pain be caused by the aleve, the cramps, or is this unrelated? I have taken aleve before without any issues.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to medicine

Detailed Answer:
HiXXXX.

The pain could be due to the medication. It is known to cause pain and tightness in the chest in some patients. Quite strange that you did not have it when you had the same medicine earlier. I suggest you stop taking the medicines. You should also rule out heart conditions by getting an ECG done during the episode.

I usually prescribe Ibuprofen or Mefenamic acid for pain associated with periods.

Take care.
