Suggest Treatment For Metallic Taste In Mouth While On Propranolol And Benedryl

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Feb 2016
Question: my son 38 started propranolol 3 to 4 days ago. after taking it this morning he complained a severe metal taste in his mouth and felt his throat burning as if he has drank windex or something. Originally he could not remember if he had taken his dosage and counted his pills and said he did not think he had so he took it. This was before the metal taste and burning. So may have taken dbl but cannot verify. Then he said he felt his throat was swelling so someone told him to take benedryl which I would not have done but he already had. We are concerned should we take him to the er?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending your question.

It sounds like he might have a sensitivity to the propranolol. At this point as long as he is breathing well and swallowing not a problem it is probably OK to support him with hydration. If the swallowing issue gets any worse than you should bring him to the emergency room for evaluation.

after taking the Benadryl he might feel sleepy. Again I wouldn't focus on good hydration for now. If the swallowing problem is not completely resolved within the next couple of hours then he should be seen by your local doctor soon as possible.

thank you again for sending the questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
