Suggest Treatment For Mosquito Bite Bruise

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Aug 2014
Question: Over 4th of July weekend I went camping in Silverton, CO. I woke up in the morning with what seemed to be two large mosquito bites. They turned into a bruise, from what I thought was excessive scratching the night before. The bruise went away after about a week and a half.

I woke up this morning with six or seven bites that are in the same area as the bites I got above, and they are shaped in a ring almost. I don't know if they are related, but wanted to give as much information as possible.

They are similar looking to mosquito bites once again, and they itch really bad too. They already feel like they are bruising as well.

Thank you,
XXXX

Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
From the description , it looks like you have developed vector dermatitis which is basically insect bite reactions .
But in order to be sure, I would like to have a look at the exact skin lesions.
Please note click some close up pictures of the skin condition and upload them here on this page .
Also please tell if there is any associated itching or pain?
Anything you have been applying over it?

I am sure I will be able to help you more once you provide me the pictures .

Brief Answer:
Lesions of beetle dermatitis, take treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I have seen the attached pictures.
The lesions surely look like those of beetle dermatitis . Basically such type of lesions tend to be either grouped or linear which coincide with insects movement over the skin.
Now you need to apply a topical steroid cream like cortisone over the affected areas twice a day to control the allergic skin reaction . Do not apply any other cream or oil over it. Sometimes oral antihistamines like benadryl have to be given along as well.

Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Thank you. Is this a reaction to getting bit over the 4th of July or is this a new bite? I have been having bad reactions to all bites I have received over this summer, does that indicate a new allergy?

I haven't applied anything to it yet, and I have a lot of itching and it's painful.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Recent insect bite reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

This has to be a recent bite. An allergic reaction to a previous insect bite could not have presented so late.
You can start the treatment as advised. I am sure it will help to relieve the allergy and you can use it later too since you seem to be prone to increased susceptibility to insect bite reactions .

Hi Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

I just wanted to follow up with a picture or two of what my bug bite looks like today. I haven't had a chance to get cream yet, but took some benedryl last night.

Does this still look okay?

Brief Answer:
Lesion better than before

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I have seen the latest pictures .
The lesion is surely better than before.
Since insect bite reactions are basically allergic reactions, so benadryl alone also helps in many cases.
You can only continue with benadryl , however if any time you feel that the lesion is reappearing or increasing , then you should get the cortisone cream as well.

Hi Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

The insect bite is larger and more swollen today then in past days. It is still VERY itchy, even with the help of benadryl and cortizone cream. How long do bug bites take to go away, should I be concerned with it getting larger (they went from multiple separated bites, to one that is the size of a half dollar)?

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You might need a direct assessment

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Since the reaction site is seemingly swollen and has increased redness, I suspect that either it is an increased allergic response or it could just be the onset of an infection.
I suggest that you should see a nearby doctor to find out the exact reason for the same.
A direct assessment might just be necessary to see if the area is just allergic or infected and then you might need a course of either oral steroids or oral antibiotics .
Till that time, I would suggest you to only continue with oral benadryl .
