Brief Answer:
Mucolytic to break up the mucus

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your husband has been bothered with mucus that is probably making it difficult for him to breath. He has already tried the zyrtec and other antihistamines but they are not helping. in fact they may actually make things worse as they dry out the mucus making it thicker and harder for the body to get rid of.

I recommend people start using a mucolytic which is a medication that makes the mucus thinner and allows it to run out easier. the most common mucolytic is guaifenesin or robitussin. You can also get it in a pill called mucinex. I also recommend drinking plenty of fluids that will add to the reduce thickness of the mucus.

If this does not help then he can use a short duration of a nasal spray for congestion. This decongestant will reduce the overall swelling inside the nose and allow for improved breathing. I do not recommend using it more than 2 or 3 days

In summary
1. Try Guaifenesin or Robitussin or mucinex
2. Nasal decongestant spray limited to 2-3 days

Some things I should have told you which I didn't. That is my bad! Sorry about that. He has a swallowing problem and is tube fed and it appears to be coming from his stomach and he chokes on it sometimes. We have used coricidan cold and flu which seems to help, but he doesn't want to live on that.

Thanks again

Brief Answer:
OK to try my recommendations except the decongestant

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning to HCM with the additional information

The problem is that his secretions are still too thick. I believe he should be sure to get plenty of fluids and try the guaifenesin to decrease the thickness of the secretions. If the secretions get too thick your doctor can get you something called mucomist which is a much stronger mucolytic but we don
t use it too often because it is such a good mycolytic.

I hope this helps.
