Question: Hi,

My mother is diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. The plasma cell count was 15% and we underwent 4 cycles of chemo

My current oncologist is suggesting 3 more cycles of chemo. As the biopsy results shows 7% plasma cells. Do we need chemo or can we sustain on medication without chemo as we are under 10%

Brief Answer:
depends on transplant or no transplant

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for following up.

Considering that she has a partial response now, she can go directly for the autologous transplant. Because if we are planning transplant then 4-6 cycles is the ideal time.

But if the doctors feel that she is not a candidate for transplant then we should continue treatment. Only the lipodox medicine is chemo and the other medicines are not chemo (bortezomib, thalidomide, dexa). So these three can be continued or at least bortezomib plus thalidomide, if she is tolerating.

Continuing at least some anti-myeloma treatment is desirable.

Hope this helps.
regards
