default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: Hi.... I have been having trouble with spasms in my left left, sometimes in my right. The spasms are more in my calf and my hamstring also is tight. As much as I stretch, it does not seem to help. I have had problems with spasms in my side after sex when I urinate. However those problems have gone away

Brief Answer:
Muscle cramps may be due to magnesium and potassium deficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Muscle spasm can be caused by:
- low potassium and magnesium levels,
- not drinking enough water,
- overuse of muscles,
- hypothyroidism,

Make sure you are well hydrated (drink at least 6 glasses of water a day), limit coffee, salt and alcohol. If you smoke stop it.

You can take magnesium supplements and check your potassium level in blood.

Also you should check your thyroid gland to rule out hypothyroidism. Make a blood tests to measure TSH, T4, T3.

Try to eat magnesium-rich foods like: raw chocolate, spinach, potatoes, bananas and broccoli.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
