Suggest Treatment For Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: I have severe Myofascial pain syndrome. in 2003 I went through hep c tx for 1yr with interferon and ribavirin. After this tx, my hair now grows in flatten intertwining circles. This became so painful that 3yrs ago I shaved my head. It felt like someone was hanging me from the ceiling by my hair. It is very organized, but total chaos. Even though my hair is short, even very light touch hurts. Recently I realized that everywhere there very tiny knots, very tight and almost embedded in my scalp. I am on disability currently, but had been a NICU RN. Physiologically, I know that this doesn't make sense. I have sought out many Dermatologists, inc a Dr. who helped develop Rogaine. No one has taken me seriously and this is EXTREMRELY painful. I have tried to no avail, searching the net for answers. I have spent TOO many sleepless nights trying to undo the chaos, but when I get one area loose, it chinches another area. I am desperate for answers, and relief. I am ready to pull my hair out, literally. Can anyone please help. Nanc

Brief Answer:
Tablet amitriptyline

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since you are having myofascial pain syndrome and your hair hurts even when touched lightly i would advise you to take tablet amitriptyline which is a tricyclic antidepressants with your doctors advise to reduce the pain.

I will also advise you to apply heat via a hot pack or a hot shower in your scalp which will relieve muscle tension and reduce pain.

If you are stressed and tense you may experience more pain. You must find ways to relax such as by meditating, writing in a journal or talking with friends which can all be helpful.

Eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables. Get enough sleep so that you wake rested.

What do you think caused this? Have you heard of this before?

Answered by Dr. Monish De (13 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Continual muscle stress and anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Yes i have heard this before.

It is caused by a stimulus such as pressure that sets off trigger points in your muscle which causes strain and pain throughout the muscle leading to this pain syndrome.

An acute muscle injury or continual muscle stress leads to the development of such trigger points.

It is also seen in people who frequently experience stress and anxiety.

If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.

I understand your answer but what causes the hair to go in such a funky pattern and can anything reverse it? Do you think it is caused by the interferon?

Brief Answer:
can be Side effect of interferon

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The hair to grow in such a funky pattern is as a result of side effect of interferon.

You can reverse it by limit washing your hair to twice a week. Massage your scalp to remove dry skin and flakes.

Avoid hard brushing of hair. Instead, gently use a wide tooth comb. When styling the hair limit the amount of pinning, curling, or blow drying with high heat.

Avoid curling or straightening the hair with chemical products, such as permanent wave solutions.
And also Discuss about amitryptiline with your doctor.
