Question: I took one nitrofurantion for a uti infection. I had allergic reaction such as nausea, chest pressure, chills, muscle pain. This was last night and now this morning I'm still having mild allergic symptoms. Will taking Benadryl help?

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for sending the question.

It is likely that most of the antibiotic is out of your system by now. If you are still having some mild allergy symptoms it certainly would not hurt to take one or two doses of Benadryl. I would consider taking 25 mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed.

Other than this I would recommend you try to stay well hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.

Of course, please contact the doctor to discuss a possible alternative antibiotic.

Thank you again for sending the question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
