Following advice on managing nausea, diarrhea&stomach upset at home...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am sorry for the health situation your wife is in.
Having nausea, diarrhea, and upset stomach are indicative for possible :
- food poisoning
- viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
You are also reporting that she is taking imodium and kaopactate for diarrhea. Both imodium and kaopactate to my recordings, contain the same active ingredient : Loperamide. It is prescribed in treating diarrhea, however, as long as we do not know the exact cause of her diarrhea, I advise not to use it, but instead, can use:
- give her plenty of water mixed with oral rehydration salts (ORS)
- encourage to have light meals: yogurt, chicken soup, BRAT diet is highly recommended (Banan, rice, apple sauce and toast).
- give antacids to optimize stomach pH as it has become more acidic when being upset
- take OTC probiotics and give to her to optimize intestinal flora
- give her tasectan or pepto bismol to stop diarrhea
- antispasmodic medications like buscopan, etc can help reduce the stomach up and possible abdominal cramps. In some countries, they come with prescription, in others can take as over the counter medications. Can ask at your local pharmacy.
If her symptoms will get worse and no improvement, then, I highly recommend to send her to ER as she might need intravenous medications and rehydration therapy.
Hope it was of help! Wish her fast recovery!
