Brief Answer:
Check thyroid, consider antidepressant/antianxiety medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

If you know that anxiety/nerves are a problem on an ongoing basis, I would recommend the following:

1. Go to your doctor for blood work to make sure there is not a medical reason for your nervousness. Things to check include thyroid hormone levels and blood sugar.

2. If there is no medical cause for the nervousness, and if it is a chronic problem, then I would suggest a long term medication - an antidepressant/antianxiety medication such as the SSRI called Lexapro (escitalopram). This type of medicine does not treat anxiety immediately but may take a few weeks to work.

For immediate relief with or without the long term treatment, you might want to take a benzodiazepine medication such as alprazolam or lorazepam. This type of medicine works immediately.

3. You might want to talk with a counselor about ways to cope with nervousness. Exercise done regularly, such as walking 3x/week, has also been shown to help.

I hope this information helps and that you are soon feeling better.

Brief Answer:
SSRIs will usually not affect thinking.

Detailed Answer:
An SSRI medication like escitalopram usually will not cause impaired thinking. The immediate relief (benzodiazepine) medications on the other hand can make people tired and sometimes affect thinking.
