Question : Hello I have neuropathy on the right side of my face which has made the right side look significantly weaker and chubbier. Is there anything I can do to make it go back to normal as I am considering surgery.

Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Vit.B supplement & physiotherapy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

Having neuropathy on the right side of your face should be further evaluated by the neurologist whether it is peripheral or related to central (brain ) pathologies.

Next, I usually recommend my patients with the same problem as you to :
- take multivitamin supplements especially of B group
- do physiotherapy to help the nerves getting back to normal function.

Wish fast recovery!

Will physiotherapy make the weakness/droopyness go away?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes,it will, determine the root cause is important

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Yes, physiotherapy will help strengthen the peripheral muscles and "wake up" the peripheral nerves. This will lead to regaining the normal muscle tone.

However, I still think to discuss with your neurologist to determine the root cause and specific treatment.

Wish fast recovery!

It happened after a weekend of heavy alcohol use. I have had MRI scan and blood tests done and it camr back all normal. Is this due to alcohol? And will it go away? I have had it for 5 months
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
It might be neuritis induced by alcohol use as long as negative MRI stroke.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Yes, heavy alcohol use might have caused nerve paralysis on your face (most probably due to neuritis induced by alcohol use).

If your MRI did not show any central (brain) issue (like hemorrhage); then, everything is related to alcohol use.

Usually, it would have been gone until now considering your age (young), but you report to have it for 5 months. Then, this makes me think:
- you have not taken neurotropic supplements so far
- have not done physiotherapy to strengthen the local muscles
- you might have continued using alcohol

I advise to stop using alcohol, eat healthy, take multivitamin supplements of group B and start physiotherapy and see changes in about a couple of weeks.

Discuss it further with your physician about my advice!
Wish fast recovery!

Thanks. I have been taking vitamins but the lower eyelid has drooped a timy bit so with physio will that even go back
To normal or would surgery have to happen to correct it
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Try physiotherapy first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

If I was your caring doctor would advise to go for physiotherapy first. Then, if no improvement, we can discuss with neurologist-surgeon for the most appropriate surgical intervention.

All the best!

Hi back my dear,

Your queries are all welcomed! I am here to do my best to help you!

I understand you have lost confidence, but, I'm sure that your face muscles will regain their tone again. You need to be patient and follow the right steps. Once again, try to schedule physiotherapy seances to speed up this process.

Good luck!

I visited my neurologist and she said my face is normal so is the neuropathy pain causing the weak sagging look in my face? Also if this neuropathy doesnt go away does that mean my face will always look weak :(
Also, I can feel my
Nerve when I put mascara on my eyelashes. My lashes feel weak because
Of it
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (13 hours later)
Brief Answer:
It's temporary, be patient, avoid too much stress..

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. Your face won't look weak all the time. If neuritis or neuropathy will be settled, your dface will be back to normality.

Now, if your neurologist ran the neurological exam and found everything is normal, it means the nerve was not damaged to the point of not getting reversed. There are good chances to get back to normal again.

2. You can feel the nerve when you put mascara because it has become more sensitive due to temporary alcohol induced neuritis. When it will be reversed, you will feel it as normal.

All the best!

What if it doesn't go back to normal? Also is it the neuropathy or the facial nerve making my face look weak?
I've attached an image, can you see the asymmetry? Is this cause by the neuropathy or by the minor Bell's palsy caused by alcohol?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (10 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Very slight asymmetry, other diagnosis to rule out first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I have gone through your photos again and have noted only a slight difference almost un-notable and not worrisome.

To my opinion, I advise to continue with physiotherapy and multivitamin supplementation.

If your neurologist did not confirmed minor Bell's palsy induced by alcohol, I advise to run:
- urine analysis to rule out kidney problems
- thyroid function test to rule out thyroid problems
- measure the electrolytes levels to rule out related imbalances

If everything is ok, and if the changes have started after heavy alcohol use, then, it might be due to minor nerve change due to alcohol use. Neurological examination will determine if it is neuropathy or Bell's palsy.

All the best!

So does that mean the damage is permanent and would it be safe to have surgical procedures done if I have neuropathy?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Not thinking over permanent damage,temporary&manageable...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I do not think it is a permanent damage if you noticed only after alcohol use. However, I admit that nerve damages are difficult to treat and changes might need time to occur.

As advised earlier, we cannot discuss about surgery unless other advised alternatives have not shown effective.

So, try physiotherapy first and then can discuss it again after 1 month of intense physiotherapy.

Thanks. Do you think the trigmenial nerve pain is causing the slight droopyness or is that not possible
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (15 hours later)
Brief Answer:
We are already talking about trigeminal nerve....

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Please understand that trigeminal nerve is innervating the majority part of the facial muscles. And when we talk about the peripheral nerve irritation in the face, we are talking about trigeminal nerve.

The pain and droppyness is related to damages caused to this nerve.

Thanks. Ive read online with people who have ghe same condition and it has never gone away. Im scared this is permanent and if i did have surgery done would my face still look droopy?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (22 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Do not get scared...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

No fear, you are too young to have permanent damages unless severe trauma happened.

If no severe trauma, no fear for permanent changes. I am sure physiotherapy will help and other pre-operative procedures.

Thanks, what do you mean by severe trauma? And is it safe to have cosmetic procedures done if i have neuropathy. I forgot to say i also have tingling in my feet 24/7 as well as the side of my face.
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (47 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Should try other procedure first prior to cosmetic/surgical procedures...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

As per your additional details, having facial neuropathy together with tingling in your feet are strongly indicative for nerve damages. Now, if all the other exams were negative and within normal limits, then, possible causes to tingling in your feet might be due to:
- compression of nerves deriving from spinal cord
- staying sit for too long
- lack of multivitamins

I advise to:
- not to stay sit for too long
- stay physically active
- eat healthy
- take multivitamins

All the best!

Thank you. Sorry that I seem so obessed with it, its because the right side o my face was the only part of my face that i liked and since this has happened my confidence has gone from 10 to 0. Do you know any cases of people who have trigmenial neuropathy and it has gone away?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Albana Sejdini Greca (18 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
My advice is given based on my personal experience with my patients...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

It seems that you are too much obsessed with your face asymmetry while it is perfectly normal. If neurological exam resulted positive for neuropathy or nerve damage, then all the advice given earlier can help reverse such problems.

You are young, and beautiful, and you need to enjoy life in the most beautiful way. What you do matters and make you become more beautiful.

All the advice given are based on the experience I have with my patients with the same problems as you. I always ask them to be in close contact with neurologist for a more specific evaluation. Furthermore, I always monitor their physiotherapy seances to see improvement.

I hope the same success to you!
