Question: Hi.. My dad is 86 and was completely treated on non Hodgkin lymphoma in his mouth, 6 years back and we did a pet CT which said 'all clear'.. His voice has always been a bit hoarse and after his treatment he has been using mild nebuliser just to be comfortable.. Now for the 15-20 days his voice has become like he has a sore throats has no cough and cold at all.. Could this be something to do with past issue... He is on omnacortil 10 mg for the last 2 months.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to upper respiratory tract infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern. He has history of non hodgkin's lymphoma.
His voice change may be due to upper respiratory tract infection. He should take a course of antibiotics like azithromycin or levofloxacin. If it doesn't respond to treatment then further investigations are needed. Don't worry much about that. Just be relaxed. Consult your doctor and start antibiotics treatment accordingly.
Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer.

Hi Doctor Sanghvi.. Thank you for your reply.. I am feeling a bit relieved now... I also wanted to tell you that he has no cough and cold and using the nebuliser has been a regular affair from the last 4-5 years, 3-4 times a day.Whenever during the day his voice became hoarse he would do 10 mets nebuliser.. The. medicines used in the nebuliser have been changed a couple of times as the earlier ones suddenly stopped being available. In the past 1 year he has been complaining of the nebuliser medicine creating some kind of powder coating in the nebuliser and so may be in his throat also... This is for your info... Our doctor has suggested that we take him for a complete check up and also consult an ENT. At this age it's going to be difficult to even explain to him why we are taking him for a complete health check. We have not done an antibiotic treatment yet.

Now Since he is having No cough and no cold, would you still suggest antibiotics? And with the above information given by me are you sure it has got nothing to do with complete treated non Hodgkin lymphoma?

Brief Answer:
One antibiotic trial should be given.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I can understand your concern. I know that he has no cough and cold. But many times pharyngitis or other upper respiratory tract infection can leads to this type of presentation. So before going for complete check up he should take a course of antibiotics. If it does not respond to treatment then ENT consultation and complete check up is needed.

Chance of nonhodgkins lymphoma related voice change is very low. So according to my opinion he should take a course of antibiotic first.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer you. Thanks for using health care magic.
