Brief Answer:
May need to return to previously tolerable dose

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I understand you are going ahead with a tapering program without the help of your doctor? It would be wise to keep a doctor living around you in the loop.

You have not mentioned how many you used to take before you began tapering of the vicodin, please do write back to me with this information.

As for a tapering program, it needs to be done slowly and not in a haste. If for example, you were doing 4 a day, then start with taking 3 a day for a week or two. If you do not experience any symptoms of withdrawal, then go down to taking 2 per day for two weeks. If no withdrawal symptoms are experienced again, go down to 1 per day for at least two weeks, and finally one per day for two weeks. Finally, reduce you dose to half a tablet a day for one week, and then half a tablet every alternate day the next week. Once that last week is done, you can either stop anytime or go for a continued tapering (taking half a tablet every 3 days, then every 4 days, then half a tablet once a week).

I advice all my patients to be as patient as possible, as this is only helpful to them and nothing else. As for your detox, if at all you have been experiencing withdrawal symptoms from reducing your daily intake of vicodin, then please go back to your previously safe (asymptomatic) dosage of vicodin. Not just now, but anytime during the tapering program, if at all you experience withdrawal symptoms, return to the previously tolerable dosage, wait for a while before you continue with the tapering again.

I hope you find my response helpful sir. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, or if I have failed to explain anything in our discussion. I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
