Question : Good morning. My 63 year old brother had a prostate brachytherapy procedure Friday morning. He came home with a Foley catheter. Is having LOTS of pain still, urine appears to be mostly blood (small clots which dr said was normal). He feels like he has to bend forward to urinate. Is this normal or should we go to ER?

Brief Answer:
May be a blocked catheter.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Following this type of procedure there may be pain and small blood clots. However, these should be reducing by this stage. There is a possibility that a clot has blocked his catheter and he has developed urinary retention.
I suggest he needs to be assessed and he should go to the ED. He needs to drink at least 2 liters of fluid per day and avoid caffeinated drinks as caffeine can irritate the bladder. Paracetamol and ibuprofen will help the pain.
I hope this is of help. If you have and further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
