Suggest Treatment For Pain And Bruise Along Foot And Ankles

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Oct 2014
Question: I have pain, similar to that of a bruise along the top inside of my foot, and it runs to just above my ankle. There is no discoloration, but it is tender to the touch, and also hurts if I stretch my foot out, like pointing my toes, the pressure of the elastic band from a sock is uncomfortable when I put them on, but subsides very quickly. I have not had any trauma to it that I can recall. It is particularly tender about two inches above the ankle. It does not hurt without motion or contact though.

Brief Answer:
May be stress facture tibia

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX

Welcome to healthcare magic.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar

After going through your query, I think you may be having stress fracture lower tibia. It is particularly tender about two inches above the ankle, commonest site of stress fracture. It does not hurt without motion, again pointing towards stress fracture. It is generally caused by repetitive minor trauma such as long distance walking, long march and dancing etc. Do you have such act?

Treatment of it is rest for few weeks. As far as possible no weight bearing on leg i.e. walking should be avoided. Analgesic such as diclofenac help to relieve pain.

Second possibility is nonspecific synovitis of ankle joint. But in this maximum pain should be on ankle joint while in your case it is about two inches above the ankle. This gradually resolve in a week or so. Rest and analgesic give relief.

To exclude rare causes you need to get MRI and ultrasound of affected area done.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.

Take care

thank you for your response. I probably should have stated, that the pain seems to reside at skin level, or shallow muscle. it is not deep seated pain.

Brief Answer:
It is tendinitis of extension tendons of toes

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX

Welcome back,

After going through your query and follow up ,as you said tenderness is just beneath the skin or near skin and it is not on bone and it is top inside of your foot to just above ankle it is very much likely that you got tendinitis of tendons of extensors of toe toes.

From nearly 3-4 inches above ankle joint extensors muscles changes to tendons(rope like structures) called extensor tendons. These tendons crosses the ankle joints then finally got attached to toes. Extensor tendinitis is inflammation of the extensors tendons which run along the top of the foot and straighten the toes. It is due to over stretching of these tendons most probably due to athletic activity or activity like it.

Tenderness will be there along course of tendons.Straightening(extension) the toes AGAINST RESISTANT IS PAINFUL.

Treatment is
1.Rest till pain is there.
2.Analgesics such as Diclofenac/Ibuprofen
3.Ice fomentation and cold therapy which you are already taking.

Similar condition is flexor tendinitis but here tenderness is behind the ankle and in sole .Treatment is also similar.

OTHER CONDITIONS WE ALREADY DISCUSSED.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wishing you good health.

Take care
