Question : I have difficulty urinating and it hurts sometimes. I am 74 years old.
I believe I may have an enlarged prostate. this has come on slowly since early summer.
Have an appointment for a complete health evaluation November 9th at the Mayo clinic. AZ
Would I be wrong to wait till then or should I see a Doctor right away.

Thanks for query .Based on the facts that you have posted you have obstructive voiding symptoms mostly due to Benign Enlargement of Prostate which is common at this age .

Since you have fixed up an appointment on 9 Nov for complete health check up I would suggest you to consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis at earliest
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Serum PSA.

In the mean while start taking Tomsulosin once daily .This will help you to improve urine flow .

Further treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.
