Suggest Treatment For Pain And Nerve Compression Due To Synovial Cyst

Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: I had an MRI done and the readings show that I have a left dorsolateral extradural mass at L4-L5 consistent with synovial cyst resulting in severe compression of the thecal sac. I am being referred to a neurosurgeon. Meanwhile I am in a lot of pain. Is this something that the the surgeon should see me quickly about? I was told to expect a 2-3 week wait. I am very discouraged due to the pain level. Should go to the emergency room to get seen quicker?

Brief Answer:
Urgent surgery required

Detailed Answer:
hi,

thanks for your question.

yes you should be seen on a fairly urgent basis to have the synovial cyst dealt with. as well as pain, weakness and numbness severe compression of the nerve roots in your spine at the level can cause urinary and faecal incontinence as well and sexual dysfunction. if this happened, so called caudal equines syndrome then this would make your case a true emergency require immediate surgical intervention.

I the meantime opiate medication, neuromodulating medication such as gabapentin and an antiinflammatory may help reduce your pain.

I hope this answers your question.

best wishes
