Suggest Treatment For Pain And Numbness In The Ankles

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jan 2017
Question: I was playing basketball this morning, made a layup and when i landed, felt a sharp and electric twinge on the inside posterior of my right knee that I could feel part way down my leg. I can walk on it, but bending it more than once generates pain and discomfort. I also can feel pain (not overly intense but significant) down into my calf and in the upper part of my shin. I get a little bit of numbness in my ankle and foot that comes and goes when I sit. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Hamstring spasm

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

You appear to be having a hamstring spasm.

Apply ice to the affected region. Keep the limb elevated. Avoid squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs and kneeling.

Take Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day after meals and antacid Tablet Rabeprazole 20mg twice a day before meals for 5 days. Apply pain killer gel (eg. containing Diclofenac).

Have a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D like eggs, dairy products, dry fruits. Get adequate sunlight exposure daily.

You should be fine in a week if you avoid strenuous activity and playing till then.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu

Thanks for the quick follow up. I will follow your advice. I do notice the pain is different than when I had a hamstring spasm in the past. The pain/discomfort is on the side of the knee where something cord-like attaches to the knee. The rest of the discomfort is lower calf and shin. I will see how it goes the next week. Thanks.
