Suggest Treatment For Pain Caused By A Blood Blister On The Shin

Question: Hi Dr- I have a significant deep skin scrape on my shin from hitting the edge of concrete steps 4 weeks ago. The initial injury created a blood blister at the site. Went to urgent care and was on 11 day course of ATB. Most swelling and bruising is gone and only scant redness around site. Wound is now scabbed approx. size 2 by 1 inch. It is deep, sensation of tingling at times and sore with some swelling at the end of the day if I have been unable to elevate. Scant clear yellow drainage when becomes swollen. I am healthy, active and no DM Question: Should I keep wound covered with product, i.e telfa pad, would management -- or -- open-to-air? Warm compresses feel good, but softens scab. Continue? Most discomfort is from scabbed area with skin dry and pulling. Thank you - P

Hi, Welcome to HCM,

1. You should clean the wound daily and cover it with a dressing pad.
2. There is no need for warm compresses.

If you apply local antibiotic ointment like Povidone iodine, it is sufficient. There is no need for oral antibiotic.

Do not strain the affected lower limb. Keep it in elevated position.
It's better to take anti inflammatory tablet twice daily till pain and redness subside.
Nothing to worry.
