Question: My wife has a bad hernia her third on. First she had the screen and it tore loose than a pig skin patch and now she has another on top of the last one. this is in her upper center belly. The doctor said she needs to lose 50lbs first. She's been trying for a month and a half and only lost 13lbs, the pain is almost more than she can stand. I don't know what to do anymore.

Brief Answer:
Strangulation of the hernial sac is the main concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query carefully and understand your concerns.

Your wife's being overweight could have a major role in the patch not being able to provide proper reinforcement. Weight loss is indeed essential and you may need to ask her to try more aggressively.

A subsequent surgery can be planned but the main concern is strangulation of the hernia. Please get ascertained by the doctor that strangulation of the hernial sac is not the cause of the pain. If such a thing seems likely, you would need to get her surgery done without any further delay.

But in case of strangulation does not seem the immediate concern, you need to give her pain medication while she tries to lose more weight.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
