Question : My 5 year old just experienced his third concussion in about 2-3 months with the last one a few weeks ago. His hit was on top of the head with forearm but not too hard. It didn't even phase him until a few minutes later when he complained about his head hurting. He cried for about 10-15 minutes, got sleepy but right around 8:10, he was feeling somewhat normal so we put him to bed. He fell asleep very quickly. We had him checked out for the other two concussions and I'm now wondering if we should get him checked out tonight? Just searching for answers right now. Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Injury sounds trivial but please watch out for any symptoms listed

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

Sorry to hear about the injury your son had. The hit on his head with the forearm sounds trivial and not a serious problem.

Head injuries need to be observed for the first 24 hours. The following are alarming symptoms (within first 24 hours) of a head injury that needs a doctors attention.

1. Vomiting
2. Seizures
3. Persisting neurological deficits
4. Difficulty in maintaining gait
5. Vision problems
6. Increasing severity of headache
7. Abnormal behavior

In children, in addition to the above, we have to look out for
(i) Persistent crying
(ii) Irritability and disturbed sleep
(iii) Refusal to feeds
(iv) Significant swelling over the scalp area
(v) Any changes in breathing

Should any of the above symptoms occur within 24 hours then you need to consult your doctor immediately.

He can be allowed to sleep but please watch out for the above mentioned symptoms until tomorrow.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
