Question: I was cutting down a 6" diameter tree branch this weekend on a ladder. When I cut the branch, the leafy end hit the ground, causing the heavy cut end to hit me on my left side midway between my lowest rib, and hip bone. I have sharp pain in the area of my lowest rib when leaning over to pick something up, when I cough, sneeze, or laugh hard.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and clear picture.
I have your history carefully and understood your concerns.
The way the branch hit you might have caused trauma to the lower ribs causing fracture and/ or edema of the ribs and surrounding tissues.and muscles attached to.
Since the ribs and the attached muscles are in action every time you lean over, cough, sneeze or laugh hard, for that matter any action that involves movement of this area.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Continue Ibuprofen at 8 hourly duration.
Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, actual examination and necessary investigation including CT scan of the abdomen and chest to rule out internal injury and to get the actual diagnosis, refer to a General Surgeon and get treated as per the findings.
Also watch for the color of urine and stool.
I hope this answers helps you an early and accurate diagnosis.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
