Question : Hello-My right shoulder is causing me a good deal of dull pain. I injured it 30 years ago and have a lump at the top of my clavicle. It has not bothered me until appx 6 weeks ago. There was no trauma, it just started aching. When I lift my head back, I feel a sharp pain. I've had two cortisone injections with no real relief. Massaging the area does help-there is no real tenderness under pressure. The last doctor I saw said I might need an MRI.

Should I treat my shoulder with heat or cold. What is the best pain relief I should take? Ibuprophen/Advil?

Brief Answer:
Hot compress and massage will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the shoulder that you have can be due to tendonitis or frozen shoulder. It can best be diagnosed with the help of an MRI scan.
Doing a hot compress followed by massage will help in decreasing the pain and inflammation. You need to avoid all the painful movements and consider going for a physiotherapy. Taking oral muscle relaxants in addition to pain killers like ibuprofen will be the best way to be relieved of pain. You can get these prescribed by your orthopedician after a proper examination and investigations.
I hope this answers your query.
