Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Feet

Question: Hi,I have recently begun to suffer with pain in my feet.specifically the pain is at the top,near to the outer edge,towards the front.It is most noticeable when I get up in the morning.I would be grateful for advice

Thanks for your question.

To answer your question i need to know more specifically where your pain is. Perhaps you could mark the spot that is most tender on your foot and then photograph your foot and send the picture to me.

I would also like to know more about the pain. What does it feel like. Is it sharp or dull. Is it there all the time or only when your walking on your foot. Does anything including medication relieve it. Does anything make it feel better. Is it associated with any weakness or numbness in your foot.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX thank you for replying to my question concerning my feet.The pain is particularly noticeable when I get out of bed in the morning.I would describe the pain is a well defined ache,and is not felt when resting-only when walking/standing.I haven't noticed any weakness in the feet but sometimes there is numbness whichI don't associate with the pain.Please find attatched photo with marked area of pain.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question, I've been away from my office at outreach clinics.

Pain in that particular region of the foot is a little unusual. I would want to obtain an Xray of your foot to make sure that the metatarsophalangeal joint of you little and 4th toes does not have arthritis.

It would be unusual to have a neuroma affecting that area also as they usually cause pain in the 2/3rd webspace although possible. Physical assessment and sometimes an MRI scan can help make this diagnosis.

The other potential particularly as you mentioned some numbness is that the pain is referred from nerve root irritation or compression in your lower back. This could be assessed at the bedside looking for numbness / weakness and a decrease in reflexes in your leg as well as a straight leg raising test to look for sciatica as well as an MRI scan.
