Question : I felt a pain in my groin when I moved funny about a week ago, (I am female) but it's been getting worse. Last night I moved funny again and the pain really shot through my upper thigh. I can barely walk or move my right leg. It's extremely painful. Is it serious or will ice help?

Brief Answer:
Doesn't sound like anything serious to me, if no improvement=hip or spine

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. The kind of pain described and the events point towards either of the two listed below or both:

1. Muscle strain

2. Pinched or entrapped nerve (could be primarily to do with the pelvic region, or could be related to the spine)

I do not believe this is anything serious, but taking your age into consideration I do have a slight doubt about this having to do with your hip and not exactly the leg region. I do recommend the following for the time being:

A. Rest, as much as possible. And especially avoid going about the 'funny' movement described by you :)

B. Ice the region as much as tolerated, this will help reduce any inflammation

C. As it could be muscular, I do recommend an elastic bandage over the affected thigh

D. If you have put on weight or are anywhere close to being overweight or obese, I do recommend weight loss

E. Continue to use an anti-inflammatory at least twice daily as tolerated

F. Posture: As there is a chance this could be nerve entrapment in the spine region, a healthy posture at all times is very important. So please do sit, stand and lie in bed in a healthy manner. Also avoid all uncomfortable footwear (wear only flats and flip flops).

G. If within about a month or so, you do not experience any improvement I recommend visiting your doctor for 3 things: An MRI spine, X-ray of bilateral hip region, and a physical examination by your doctor

I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to write to me anytime, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
