Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Joint Of The Big Toe

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: Hi Dr, I am 64 years old and in excellent health. Plenty of exercise. I woke up this AM with extreme pain in the joint of my left big toe . Very difficult to walk at work and definitely would mess up my golf game. There were no prior symptoms - just feels like I severely sprained it. I have been on my knees gardening, looking at putts, etc but never had a problem. What do you think? Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Can be sprain or gout.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the joint of the big toe could be due to an injury or sprain or due to gouty arthritis.
Gout happens when there are increased uric acid levels in the blood and the uric acid crystals start depositing in the joint capsules causing the joint inflammation.
It can happen due to decreased excretion of urates by kidney, dietary changes or due to genetic predisposition.
It is associated with consumption of alcohol, seafood and meat.
Taking a diet rich in vitamin C, dairy products and coffee is likely to help in improvement of symptoms.
Drink plenty of water daily to help the kidneys clear the uric acid. Do take a mild pain killer and consult your orthopedician and get your blood urate levels evaluated for proper diagnosis.
I hope this answers your query.
