Question : Is severe pain on the left side below the rib cage a symptom of pancreotitis?

I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
Pancreatitis generally cause pain in the epigastrium( just below the middle of your rib cage). But it is possible to get anywhere in the abdomen.
You can simply rule out pancreatitis by doing some simple blood tests. Do serum amylase and lipase level. It is very much increased(in thousands) in patients with pancreatitis. You can also go for an ultrasound scan.

If a person experiences very strong persistent paid under left rib cage for a week, what could it be and what do you suggest?

It could be costochondritis.

Detailed Answer:
Costochondritis can be a possible differential diagnosis. Pancreatitis can also present like this but generally pain is confined to middle of the chest wall.
Other less likely causes are pericarditis and angina.
