Brief Answer:
Have over the counter pain medications helped?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

This raises legitimate concerns about a possible problem with the cervical spine. I will like to know if you have ever had trauma to the neck region or some neck pain in the past. If this be the case, I will suggest that you get an X-ray of the neck and we go from there.

In the interim, if the OTC pain medications have been helping, continue with them. If not, let me know and I will recommend something else.

Very important, also describe to me the nature of the pain- How it starts, what makes it worse, how long it last, the nature(burning, electric current, pressure like, etc.), its severity, etc. Is your vision affected by this and how often do you get this pain in a day?

These will help in arriving at a diagnosis and providing helpful options to you. I wish you well.

I have not had any neck trauma. The pain feels like my head is in a vice; pressure and occasionally there is some pain (not much) around my sinuses. I have tried over the counter meds such as Excedrin, but it hasn't helped. The pain comes on and it usually lasts all day; it has been frequent over the last 4 days. Twisting my head makes the neck pain worse, but not the head pain. I have no blurry vision and the pain lasts all day.

The pain right now is located on the right side of my head, near the top above my ear. It is a mild pain, feels like pins are sticking in my head.

Brief Answer:
This seems a neuropathic pain or migraine!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

At this time, I will recommend an X-ray of the neck region. I think a nerve is being compressed at the head/neck region. An X-ray would inform us on this and guide treatment options.

Since this pain isn't severe or debilitating, I will not want empiric treatment prior to evaluation. Should you insist on trying a medication, I will recommend as first line Motrin 400mg at most thrice daily.

Look forward hearing from you!
