Brief Answer:
pain killers

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

Upper respiratory tract infections are frequently viral in nature and hence antibiotics do not work for the first five days. After 5-6 days there will be secondary bacterial infection and then it will be necessary to use antibiotics.

Since she has been having symptoms for only 3 days she can wait for another 2 days to start antibiotics and Penicillin group antibiotics work best for throat infections.

She can take pain killers like tylenol or ibuprofen after checking the dose appropriate for her. She can also use tantum oral gargles 3 times daily to reduce the pain. Please read the instructions carefully before using them. They should not be used for more than 4 days.

She should also follow some general measures
1) Warm salt water gargling 4 times daily.
2) Plenty of warm fluids 4 litres per day.
3) Avoid cold foods and drinks.
4) Avoid airconditioner and fan.
5) Steam inhalation for the throat.
6) Plenty of rest and nutritious food.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi
