Question : I've been feeling a mild pain where the buttock meets the leg for a couple of weeks now. I figured I probably pulled a muscle during one of the strength training sessions. It didn't bother me much. I ran on my treadmill Thursday night and the pain got a bit worse. I let it rest on Friday. It felt much better so I decided to go for the run on the trail. I ran for about 2 miles when I started to feel the pain with each step I took. I slowed down and started walking and the pain immediately increased. I was barely able to walk. After i made it home, I could only lie down. Any kind of movement and walking especially caused a sharp-shooting pain that radiated in the back of my leg where it meets the body (the same spot that I sit on). I couldn't put any weight on my foot, could turn, could sit easily. I've treated it with ice and 800 mg ibuprofen (Advil). Suggestion?

Brief Answer:
Cause could be hamstring pull or pinched nerve

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. The cause could be hamstring muscle pull/stiffness or pinched nerve at lower back.To help you further please tell me-
1.Is there any numbness or tingling sensation in leg?
2.Do you have radiating pain from buttock to back of thigh and going up to foot?
3.Does the pain increases on bending forward in standing position with knee fully straight(in extension)?
Meanwhile you may take rest along with muscle relaxant drug like thiocolchicoside beside ibuprofen. Your local pharmacist/GP might know about it .
Looking forward to your reply.
Take care

thank you for such a quick response. I provided responses to your follow-up questions below:

1. I don't feel the numbness going through the leg. When I try to walk or stand for a couple of minutes, it's when I feel a little bit of numbness in the front, right at the top of my leg.

2. yes. It's more of an ache when I"m resting or sitting. However, when I step on my foot or turn, then I feel a sharp-shooting pain that goes through my leg. It feels kind of deep inside the leg.

3. the pain does not increase when I try to bend forward.. but it does increase when I try to lift my leg front (not sideways) and when i walk up the stairs.

thank you for the advice.

Brief Answer:
Pinched nerve could be the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello
You are welcome
I have gone through your reply carefully and keeping in mind the duration of symptoms, it could well be the pinched nerve. It needs physical examination along with MRI of lumbar spine to confirm.
You may add the drug pregablin to the suggested medicine's previously. Please get it prescribed along with thiocolchicoside from your local doctor. Most of the time patient do well, with the above told medicine.
Beside drugs, you should take rest and avoid running/prolong sitting.
Get well soon.
Take care
