Suggest Treatment For Pain Near Knee Along With Burning Sensation

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Hi: About two months ago I was kneeling/sitting on my heels cleaning out some draws when I felt a sharp pain on the outside of my left knee along the shin bone causing a warm burning sensation. To this day I have dull constant pain about six inches below my kneecap. There is a little swelling at the end of the day. I can walk with no problem but I can't put any pressure on that area of my leg. If I kneel and put any pressure on it, I see stars. Other than that it's dull pain. Taking advil. My previous medical history is medial meniscus tears in both knees. I had an arthroscopic procedure in 2011 on the left knee. I get cortisone injections and synvisc in both knees which helps but this last time the cortisone helped the knee itself but not the pain in my leg. My orthopedic Dr. was not sure. I would appreciate any advice.

Brief Answer:
You are likely to be having osteoarthritis along with stress fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for choosing healthcare magic for your query.

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your question and understand your concern.

You are having osteoarthritis both knee joints for which you are already on treatment like synvisc injection and cortisone.

This pain 6 inches below knee cap on shin is likely to be stress fracture (also called shin splint ) as there is swelling and it is tender to touch. It may show on x ray but generally bone scan is required to confirm it.

I generally advise such persons coming to my clinical to get there vitamin D3 level done as vitamin D3 deficiency may some contribution to the problem.

As far as its treatment is concerned. Rest (avoid putting weight) to leg, icing and analgesic will be of help(you are already icing and taking analgesic). It may take few weeks time to heal. You can continue with your osteoarthritis treatment. I also prescribe Diacerine and glucosamine to such persons with good results as these prevent and to some extent repair the degenerative changes. You can take vitamin D3 supplements if its levels are low.

You can discuss with your Doctor about it.

Hope your query got answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.

Take care.
